What to do if you experience Digital Abuse
Digital abuse can frightening. Here's what you can do if you find yourself experiencing digital and online harassment.
Block them / mute your notifications. It's okay to not pick up the phone or say "no" to unwanted requests.. You do not have to send pictures of yourself or give into any demands that make you feel uncomfortable.
Change Your Passwords. If your abuser / harasser has access to any of your accounts change your passwords.
Be careful of posting your location. Be mindful when posting photos or status updates that reveal your location. It can be dangerous to let an abusive partner know where you are. Communicate with friends and family members about including you in their status updates if they have mutual contacts with your abuser.
Adjust your privacy settings. Set profiles to private and adjust who can see content on your social media feeds.
Keep Detailed Records. If you receive repeated threats, demands, and unwanted encounters with an abuser, keep detailed records of each event. Take screenshots, download voicemails, and collect evidence. These details can become important when involving law enforcement.
Get Help. If you receive repeated threats and harassment get help. Depending on where you live, revenge porn, cyberbullying, and online harassment may be illegal and prosecutable.
You deserve to feel safe in your relationships. If you or anyone you know is experiencing digital abuse, seek help. You are not alone and YOU MATTER!
