What is Legal Abuse?

LEGAL ABUSE occurs when an abusive person uses the law or legal threats in order control or scare you. Legal abuse can often include emotional and economic abuse and commonly occurs in domestic and family violence scenarios.


Legal abuse includes legal bullying, intimidation and harassment that is meant to punish, scare, or control you during or after a relationship. It can include a broad variety of tactics and threats. Here are some of them:


Examples of LEGAL ABUSE


In a Relationship


  • Destroying your legal documents

  • Destroying legal evidence

  • Holding documents hostage (passport, IDs) so you can't leave

  • Making threats to report you to law enforcement under false claims if you leave

  • Threatening to report you to immigration authorities

  • Stopping you from getting legal advice or counsel


After a Relationship


  • Delaying legal proceedings to frustrate or bankrupt you.

  • Ignoring court orders

  • Creating large legal bills for you

  • Using the law or court decisions to further contact and abuse you.
